THE UNCOMMON GUY EDIT

No fireplace. No problem.

Nine candles for wood smoke, warm rooms and an evening you’re quite happy to spend at home.

A roaring log fire makes a cold afternoon or winter evening at home feel rather good. These candles recreate some of that smell and atmosphere in a small glass jar, without the expense of a fireplace or the faff of keeping the logs going. They run from charred wood and resin to softer spice: a little something to make staying in more inviting.

D.S. & Durga Portable Fireplace

01 / The most literal brief

D.S. & Durga Portable Fireplace

A smoky candle with pine, cedar, oak ash and birch tar.

Our takePine, cedar, oak ash and birch tar make Portable Fireplace a direct answer to the brief: dry wood and smoke, with little interest in sweetness. We’d choose it for a room where the scent of burning logs is the whole point. The plain glass keeps the attention on the fragrance.

Good to knowThe quoted 60-hour burn gives you about a month of two-hour evenings: roughly £2 each. Reports on how far the scent travels vary, so we wouldn’t buy it on the promise of filling a large room.

Homework Fire

02 / Smoke with a little spice

Homework Fire

A UK-poured wax candle blending smoky woods, citrus and spice.

Our takeThink of a Cotswolds pub fireplace: smoky wood with something warmer and spicier behind it. Blood orange, clove and coriander give Fire that extra interest, with hiba, cedar and cade underneath. The rapeseed-and-coconut wax candle is hand-poured in the UK.

Good to knowThe quoted 35–40 hours means around 18–20 two-hour evenings. One candle is £43 with delivery; follow the maker’s first-burn instructions for an even wax pool.

Earl of East Smoke & Musk 170ml candle with its box

03 / The cabin, at a smaller commitment

Earl of East Smoke & Musk

A 170ml candle scented with balsam fir, wood smoke and patchouli.

Our takeGreen balsam fir, wood smoke and patchouli give Smoke & Musk its woodland character. We like the balance of green and smoky notes for the cooler months: atmospheric without leaning on cinnamon or sweet vanilla. At £26, it is an approachable place to start.

Good to knowAt £26 for a quoted 35–40 hours, you’re looking at roughly £1.30–£1.50 for a two-hour evening. A reasonably priced way to find out if smoky scents are your thing.

The White Company Fireside

04 / The softer landing

The White Company Fireside

A fireside fragrance of smoked woods, birch and amber.

Our takeWe keep coming back to Fireside on grey afternoons. It hasn’t got the strongest throw, but we love the fragrance: a soft impression of a wood fire, rather than a room full of smoke. The wax looks great, too. Lovely for an afternoon on the sofa.

Good to knowAt two hours an evening, the quoted 40-hour burn gives you around 20 evenings at £1.50 each.

Diptyque Feu de Bois

05 / For the fire itself

Diptyque Feu de Bois

Diptyque’s wood-fire fragrance in a grey-wax 190 g candle.

Our takeThe unusual grey wax stands out before you light it. We love the elegant, resinous wood scent: it gives the room character without turning sweet. A lovely candle for an evening at home, and a particularly handsome jar to leave out afterwards.

Good to knowThe brand’s 50–60-hour estimates work out to 25–30 two-hour evenings, around £2.10–£2.50 each. Buy it for the fragrance while it’s lit; how long that lingers varies with the room.

Rains Petrichor Fire in frosted glass with aluminium lid

06 / Warm woods, softer edges

Rains Petrichor Fire

A frosted-glass candle with sandalwood, tobacco leaf and iris.

Our takeWe like the idea of a fireside candle that leaves the ash outside. Rains lists sandalwood, tobacco leaf and softened iris for Petrichor Fire: a woody, gently floral direction for an evening at home. The frosted glass and aluminium lid make a handsome addition to the room even before it is lit.

Good to knowThe quoted 35-hour burn covers around 17 two-hour evenings, with a little left over. At roughly £2.60 an evening, choose it for the woods and iris rather than a literal log-fire scent.

MALIN+GOETZ Cannabis

07 / The herbal detour

MALIN+GOETZ Cannabis

An herbal, woody fragrance in a 225 g candle.

Our takeDon’t be fooled by the name: it doesn’t smell like the cannabis you might expect. We love its herbal depth, with pepper, bergamot and cedar giving you more than smoke alone. It has a good throw, too: we’ve found the fragrance carries well through the room.

Good to knowThe current 225g candle quotes 60 hours: about 30 two-hour evenings, just under £2 each. Check the pack weight when comparing prices, as older stock can differ.

P.F. Candle Co. Teakwood & Tobacco

08 / Woods without the bonfire

P.F. Candle Co. Teakwood & Tobacco

A 204 g soy-wax candle with leather, woods and orange.

Our takeLeather, woods and a little orange make this an appealing choice if you want something woody with less literal smoke. P.F. says this standard size is designed to scent a room gently, so we’d choose it for background fragrance. The amber jar looks good on a shelf, too.

Good to knowAt the £24 offer and quoted maximum of 50 hours, that’s up to 25 two-hour evenings. If it reaches that burn time, each costs under £1; actual duration will vary.

Paddywax Library · John Steinbeck

09 / A sweeter kind of campfire

Paddywax Library · John Steinbeck

A 170 g candle combining smoked birch, fruit and spice.

Our takeSmoked birch and amber lead the name, but the full note list also includes apple, black raspberry, cinnamon and maple bark. That makes this a more rounded, sweet-spiced proposition than the austere label might suggest. The small jar is a relatively inexpensive way to find out which side of smoky you like.

Good to knowAt £18, it’s the smallest outlay here. The exact UK listing doesn’t give a burn time, so we can’t fairly compare how many evenings you’ll get from it.
