THE UNCOMMON GUY EDIT
The case for jockstraps.
Nine jockstraps for looking good, feeling good and wearing something a little less expected.
Let’s talk about jockstraps. Maybe they make you think of US college sport, or maybe you’ve never tried one. The open back and a well-placed waistband are a fun change from the usual briefs, boxers or trunks, whether you’re dressing for yourself or someone else. There’s the gym support, too.
The pouch should support without squeezing, the waistband should stay put, and you shouldn’t have to keep adjusting the rear straps. We’ve looked at cut and fabric, but how you’ll look in them matters just as much. Have fun with it.

01 / Quiet from the front
Ron Dorff Jockstrap
Ron Dorff swaps the large logo for two small eyelets, making the wide waistband feel more discreet.
Our takeWe loved how our asses looked in these, too. The straps give the back a clean outline, while the wide waistband keeps things simple: two small eyelets instead of a big logo. It’s a good-looking pair if you want the shape without the branding.
Good to knowRon Dorff describes a tailored fit and recommends your usual size. The straps should lie flat beneath the seat; wash gently at 30°C and air-dry.

02 / The sporty one
Nike Everyday Cotton Stretch 3-pack
A broad Nike waistband brings the sportswear association, while the open back changes the silhouette.
Our takeGreat for the gym if you like the support and open back of a jock. The cotton-stretch fabric feels familiar, and the bold Nike waistband looks right with your usual kit. Three black pairs means you’ve got a couple spare when one’s in the wash.
Good to knowThe cotton-rich fabric gives this a familiar everyday feel. Choose by the pouch and strap fit; cotton stretch alone does not indicate specialist sweat management.

03 / The familiar waistband, reconsidered
Calvin Klein Icon Cotton Stretch 3-pack
The Calvin Klein waistband is instantly recognisable; an open back gives it a rather different character.
Our takeThe mid-rise cut and two-layer contoured pouch offer a more substantial front than the lighter options here, with cotton stretch keeping the fabric familiar. A good starting point if you like your underwear clean, graphic and uncomplicated.
Good to knowFit starts at the waist: use Calvin Klein’s size guide, then look for a pouch that supports without flattening or pinching. The three-pack gives you a ready rotation.

04 / A little locker-room nostalgia
BIKE 1980s Vintage Jockstrap in Cream
Cream, red stripes and a broad BIKE waistband: this is the locker-room reference turned into something worth showing off.
Our takeThe cream, red stripes and broad waistband have exactly the US college-sport, locker-room feel we were after. There’s something fun about those old-school proportions, especially if most of your underwear’s plain black. The cotton-rich pouch keeps the front familiar.
Good to knowThe three-inch waistband makes a strong line at the waist; one-inch rear straps frame the seat. The fabric is 85% cotton and 15% polyester. Small is listed as backordered; check your size.

05 / A little more drama
WOH Night Universe Jockstrap
The leather-look pouch catches the light, while the broad waistband and open back give the body a strong graphic frame.
Our takeThis was another step outside our usual underwear drawer. We found the more revealing shape fun to wear with a partner; it brought a playful edge to bedtime. The leather-look finish makes more of a statement than the cotton pairs here.
Good to knowThe leather effect comes from polyester and elastane, with an unlined pouch. Use a laundry bag; choose another fabric if workout breathability is your main priority.

06 / A waistband worth showing
Tom Ford Cotton Jock Strap
The black-and-white Tom Ford waistband is the point, and we like its confidence.
Our takeBeneath it, the spare black cotton design makes a clean frame for the body, with little decoration competing for attention. This is the pair for someone who enjoys a recognisable name at the waist.
Good to knowAt £65 per pair, the recognisable waistband is part of the appeal. Wash at 30°C and air-dry to care for the cotton and elastic.

07 / Low rise, less fuss
CDLP Jock Strap
CDLP keeps the waistband low and the branding quiet, letting the shaped pouch and open back do the work.
Our takeWe loved how our asses looked in these. The low waistband and clean straps frame the back nicely, without a huge logo competing for attention. The lyocell-rich fabric gives CDLP a silkier feel than the cotton pairs here.
Good to knowHang it to dry to care for the lyocell-rich fabric. CDLP notes that the black gradually fades with wear and washing.

08 / A lighter touch
Doreanse 1004 Fantasy Jockstrap
The fine micromodal pouch is unlined, and that lighter coverage is part of the appeal.
Our takeThe more revealing front wasn’t something we were used to, but we had fun with it. That fine, unlined pouch made wearing these with a partner feel a bit more daring. At £8, they’re an easy way to try a different look.
Good to knowThe unlined micromodal pouch gives lighter coverage than Calvin Klein’s two-layer front. Different light can change how revealing that fine fabric looks.

09 / Soft fabric, a strong outline
BIKE Active Jockstrap in Grey / Black
Grey marl against a black waistband gives this BIKE a clean, sporty outline.
Our takeThe grey marl and black waistband give this a fun locker-room vibe. It’s a little less retro than the cream BIKE, with a narrower waistband and a modal-rich pouch. We like it peeking above a pair of shorts.
Good to knowThe fabric is 91% modal and 9% elastane, with a narrower one-and-a-half-inch waistband than the vintage cream pair. Machine-wash and tumble-dry low.
